MY APPROACH

I’m a Sydney-based, Design Centre Enmore-trained Interior Designer and Decorator who launched Jess Maybury Interiors in 2019, having previously worked in full time interior design roles for other larger design and construction companies.

From the beginning of my career in design, I knew I wanted to have my own boutique interior design firm. I like to have control of every part of the process and create holistic, nurturing client relationships that deliver the perfect result for each project.

Overall, my approach is collaborative and highly communicative. I spend a lot of time understanding my clients needs and wants to ensure the end result is tailored to them, and far exceeds their expectations.

I also believe it’s my job to respectfully challenge them when I see them asking for something that I know is wrong for their space or too boring a design choice that they will later regret!

I aim to create interiors that feel warm, artful, grounded, chic, cultured and considered. Always with an edge of playfulness and the unexpected.

Good interior design should carry emotional impact and I’ll go even further to say that I believe it has the power to transcend humans to a more joyful version of reality. If you are looking into working with me, I am so excited to hear from you!

MY PROCESS

FOR RENOVATIONS & NEW BUILDS

  • First we meet together for an initial consultation to discuss your brief, build budget and timeline. Once I’ve learnt this, I provide you with a tailored project proposal which breaks down my flat fee quote, the project’s scope and my estimated timeline.

I start by revising your floorplan collaboratively with yourself and your architect/draftsman and/or builder to make any suggested edits based on what I personally know will work best for the interior design and what I’ve learnt from you that you’d like the end result to look and feel like.

On a practical level, this often includes things like looking for areas we can add in hidden storage, assessing window designs based on the window coverings we’s like to use and checking that each room overall has the right dimensions, flow, shape and size for the particular aesthetic, joinery, appliances and furniture we’d like each to have in each.

  • I then move to designing and specifying all aspects of the interior.

What the layout of the kitchen will be, what style, brand and colour your tapware will be, what tiles, grout colour, grout thickness, appliances, sinks, skirting style, floors, benchtops…

Absolutely every detail that goes into a home that your builder will be asking about so they can complete your build!

  • Once you are happy with all my suggested designs, I then order the goods/PC items, arrange their deliveries and/or interim storage, and move to documentation stage so I can successfully communicate all details of the design to your builder and the necessary trades.

The entire time I am working very closely with these people to ensure clear and streamlined communication; As well as yourself.

I find clients often won’t know what certain construction terms mean, or how to read specific details on a floorplan. Even knowing how a particular design decision will effect their budget. All of which can leave them feeling confused, overwhelmed and stressed.

So I really take my time explaining these to them in ways they can understand, allowing them to feel confident (and excited!) in their decision making.

  • Once construction has began, I regularly visit site and communicate with the builder and/or your project manager to ensure everything is coming along swimmingly and according to spec.

If (or when) obstacles arise, I’m right there with you assisting you to navigate each to ensure a beautiful end result regardless of any hurdles that may present themselves.

If you happened to add on my interior styling service, then I am simultaneously at this point putting together your furniture and styling proposal so your home can be turn-key ready, complete with all your gorgeous new furniture, art and styling after construction is complete.

MY PROCESS

FOR INTERIOR DECORATING

  • After meeting with you for our initial consultation, seeing your space and asking you all my brief-specific questions, I start by carfully assessing your floorplan to learn what furniture configurations will suit your space best and work within your desired look, budget and lifestyle.

  • With this information guiding me, I then go to work dreaming up, designing and sourcing the perfect look for each room.

This stage can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on the size and nature of the project but a good designer will never rush this!

One of my teacher’s in design school would always say “We don’t just source good enough, we source fabulous!”.

  • I then present to you my proposed design and sourced findings (the actual items I am recommending you purchase) for your feedback.

I explain exactly why I have recommended what I have and help you understand why it is right for the space, however if you don’t resonate with my first idea, I source up to 3 different options for you (for no additional fee). Most of the time though, clients love and agree with my first pick!

  • Once you are happy with the design and design selections, your goods are invoiced for me to purchase and have delivered. I then ensure items are installed in their correct positions and proceed with styling in the finishing touches like cushions, throws and decor items.

If there are any after service issues with orders or returns needed, I action this process for you to ensure everything looks and works perfectly.
